Whitney Young and Morgan Park Bring Home State Titles

Whitney YoungThe Chicago Public League shined at this years state high school basketball tournament. Whitney Young earned the class 4A title with a 46-44 victory over Lisle Benet. Morgan Park won the class 3A championship with a 59-49 victory over Lincoln.

Whitney Young wins its second class 4A championship in six years. Both the boys and girls teams won state championships in 2014.

Miles Reynolds lead everyone with 19 points for nationally ranked Whitney Young. Jahlil Okafor (Duke) contributed eight. Paul White hit two free throws with :19 seconds on the clock to seal the victory.

The three senors played over 100 games together.

“We are brothers,” Reynolds said. “I don’t think anything can change that. Basketball doesn’t define us or our friendship.”

Morgan Park brings home its second consecutive class 3A title. Josh Cunningham lead Morgan Park with 13 points and nine rebounds.

“Last year we had veteran leadership,” Morgan Park coach Nick Irvin said. “It was sweeter this year because last year I expected to be here, but this year was just a treat.”
