Movie Review: X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Written by on May 7, 2009

WolverineThe X-Men took to the big screen once again, and once again they nailed it when it comes to action and special effects.

The latest installment is X-Men Origins: Wolverine.  As usual, the comic book characters come to life on screen well, and this time they take us on a very fun science fiction ride based fifteen years or so before the fist X-Men movie.

Wolverine is joined by his Team X members: The leader Col. William Stryker, his brother Sabretooth, Blob, John Wraith, Deadpool, Bolt, and Agent Zero.

One might also notice the young characters Cyclops, Deadpool, Gambit, and of course Professor Xavier.

The X-Men kinda bites a little from Stars Wars, as this film is set before the first trilogy occurs.  It basically covers the time leading to when Wolverine was injected with the indestructible metal adamantium, and he looses his memory.  Though I like the X-Men a little better than Star Wars, I must admit that I was more moved when Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader than the moment when Wolverine looses his memory.

Over all, this movie is definitely recommended for Sci-Fi and action fans.  True X-Men comic fans will never be satisfied, because these types of movies will never be “as good as the book” if you will.  X-Men is good, but it mangles the comic book story line maybe a little too noticeably for some.

Roger Ebert wasn’t too enthused:

“Why should I care about (Wolverine)? He feels no pain and nothing can kill him, so therefore he’s essentially a story device for action sequences.”

Well, I say bring on the action!  And Marvel definitely leaves it all wide open for more and more action and special effects to come in the future.
