The Los Angeles Lakers’ bid to repeat as NBA champions might’ve gotten easier with Thursday’s agreement from 1-time All-Star & Defensive Player of the Year Ron Artest, who will receive $18 million over the next 3 seasons.

The Lakers will be Artest’s 3rd team in the last 3 seasons, as he joins Kobe Bryant to give LA perhaps the most lethal offensive & defensive guard/forward combination in the league.

Artest’s agreement to join the Lakers coincides with Trevor Ariza’s depature, who agreed to a multiyear deal with the Houston Rockets.

If Los Angeles is able to re-sign Lamar Odom, it will reunite him with Artest. The twosome paired together as teenagers on an AAU team in New York City.

Phil Jackson also announced that he will return to coach the Lakers for the 2009-2010 season, as he has now won an NBA-record 10 championships.
