A’s release Jason Giambi…

Despite the dwindling power numbers, Jason Giambi is hoping that a playoff-hopeful team will give him a chance to be involved in a pennant race.

The Oakland Athletics cut ties with Giambi on Friday, which will end his 7 & a half year stint with the club.

Giambi has played 1st base for a majority of his career, but has not hit over 30 home runs & driven in over 100 runs batted in since 2006 with the New York Yankees. (37 hr/113 rbi/.253 avg).

Jason had a powerful 5-year run between 1998-2003 with the A’s & Yankees in which he hit 25 homers or more, drove in 100 or more runs & batted at least .290 or higher.

It’s been a disappointing 2009 season so far for the 15-year veteran, as he is averaging career lows in batting average (.193), on-base percentage (.332)  & slugging percentage (.364).
