Written by on August 20, 2009

Former wide receiver Plaxico Burress accepted a plea bargain today in Manhattan for an accidental self-shooting in his thigh in November of 2008 that occured outside a local New York nightclub.

Instead of facing a possible 3 & a half year prison sentence, Plaxico will spend 2 years in prison after his sentencing on September 22nd, which could be reduced to 20 months for good behavior.

The 32-year old Burress will also be monitored for an additional 2 years following his prison release, which could make it very difficult for him to make his way back into the National Football League.

He was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 8th pick in the 2000 NFL Draft out of Michigan State University & spent his first 5 seasons in Pittsburgh, where he eclipsed the 1,000 yard receiving mark twice.

Burress then signed a 6-year deal with the Giants & only completed 4 years out of the deal, as he also went over the 1,000 yard receiving mark twice & played a big role in New York’s Super Bowl XLII upset win over the previously unbeaten New England Patriots.
