After helping end a 3-year playoff drought, the Chicago Bears have decided to reward their head coach for it.

Lovie Smith will receive a two-year contract extension that was made official Friday, as it will keep him in Chicago through 2013.

Despite the NFC Championship Game loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Packers, Smith is excited about the progress his team made this season & is excited for the future:

“I think the core is in place, starting with Jay Cutler, our quarterback, leading us. I wouldn’t ask for any other quarterback. I’m excited about him going into that second year with Mike and seeing those improvements on the offensive side. We realize we have the Super Bowl champs in our division, and we’re looking up to them. We’re looking forward to this next year of trying to get ourselves in position where we can hold up the Lombardi trophy.”

Smith is 63-49 in 112 career games coached with the Bears & is 3-3 in the playoffs, which includes a loss in Super Bowl XLI to the Indianapolis Colts.

He is ranked 3rd on the Bears’ list of career games coached, only trailing George “Papa Bear” Halas & Mike Ditka.
