Saint Mary’s Sweet 16 bound for 1st time in 51 years!

Written by on March 20, 2010

In Saturday afternoon’s first big upset of the day, 10th seeded Saint Mary’s stunned 2nd seeded Villanova 75-68 behind Omar Samhan’s game-high 32 points.

The loss for Villanova is an absolute shocker, which comes just one year after they reached the Final Four for the first time in 24 years.

Saint Mary’s junior guard Mickey McConnell wound up hitting the game-winner, as he stopped from 25 feet out & banked home a three-pointer that sent the Gaels fans into a frenzy.

Villanova was led by junior guard Corey Stokes’ 15 points, but leading scorer Scottie Reynolds struggled for the 2nd straight tournament game with just 8 points on 2-of-11 shooting (4-of-25 total).

Saint Mary’s will now advance to their first Sweet 16 appearence since 1959 & will face the winner of the Baylor/Old Dominion game.
